One torch. One street. A great many zombies who are about to have a very bad day.

The dead have taken the city and they are between you and the end of the road. You are not armed, exactly. You are carrying fire, and the street is full of things that burn. Work out what to light and in what order, and the whole block goes up behind you.

HOW TO PLAY

You move down the street with a torch in your hand. Everything flammable you touch catches.

Chairs, sofas, crates, fire barrels, abandoned bicycles. Set one alight and the flames spread to whatever is close enough, and from there to whatever is close to that. A single well placed fire can take out a whole cluster of zombies without you going anywhere near them.

Get it wrong and the fire burns out in an empty patch of road while the dead keep coming. Reach the end of the street and the level is yours.

WHY IT WORKS

The pleasure here is the chain. You light one chair, it catches the sofa, the sofa catches the barrel, and the barrel takes three zombies with it. You did not touch any of them. You just started something in the right place and watched it travel.

That turns every street into a small problem worth looking at. The fastest route is rarely the best one, because the best one is wherever the fire will do the most work for you.

THE ONE THAT DID NOT CATCH

Every player learns the same lesson: a gap in the furniture is a dead fire. You light something at the near end, the flames race along beautifully, and then stop a metre short of the barrel that would have finished the job.

You cannot relight what has already burned. That single rule is what makes a clean run satisfying and a wasted one genuinely annoying.

BUILT FOR ONE MORE GO

A level lasts under a minute and there is nothing to manage between attempts. Fail a street and you are back at the top of it immediately, already knowing which object you should have lit first.

It plays well with half your attention, until a layout comes along that needs thinking about.

WHAT IS ON THE STREET

Early levels are generous. Furniture is clustered, the zombies are slow and almost any fire you start will do some good. Later streets spread things out, put the useful objects behind the dangerous ones and give the dead bicycles.

The scenery is doing real work. A row of chairs is a fuse. A fire barrel is a bomb. An empty stretch of tarmac is a wall your flames cannot cross, and learning to see the street that way is the whole game.

QUICK TIPS

• Look down the street before you move. Find the chain, then start it.
• The nearest object is rarely the right one. Light the one that connects to the most.
• Barrels are amplifiers. Route the fire into them rather than starting there.
• If a run keeps failing, you are probably lighting too early.
